Did you know that the temperature in your sleeping area and how comfortable you feel in it affect how well you sleep?
Research has shown that a mild drop in body temperature induces sleep – and so, a mildly cooler sleep environment makes it easier for that to happen and even improves the quality of your sleep.
According to H. Craig Heller, PhD, professor of biology at Stanford University, “When you sleep, your set point for body temperature – the temperature your brain is trying to achieve – goes down. Think of it as the internal thermostat.” Therefore, if it’s too hot or too cold, your body struggles to achieve its set point, making it difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep.
Because individual comfort levels vary, it’s difficult to recommend a specific temperature. Experts from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine suggest thinking of your bedroom as a cave: it should be cool, quiet, and dark. Typical recommendations range around 65oF or 18oC, give or take a few degrees. Finding the right temperature will help you fall asleep faster and sleep better.
