Exercise for sleep

You don’t need to be a top athlete to reap the benefits of regular exercise. As little as 20-30 minutes of physical activity every day will help you sleep more soundly. A brisk walk, a bike ride, some gardening or any other activity that gets you moving.

According to The National Sleep Foundation, physical activity is an important part of ensuring a good night’s sleep. Though opinions vary on the best time of day to exercise, experts agree that regular exercise can help you fall asleep faster and stay asleep all night. For some people, working out early in the day or afternoon is best as evening workouts can stimulate the body, making it harder to get to sleep. If you don’t want to exercise vigorously at night, you may enjoy more relaxing exercises such as yoga or gentle stretching, which also help promote sleep.

Just a little goes a long way

Physical activity is great for your heart and waistline, but it does much more than that! Research has shown that individuals who are regularly active find it easier to deal with daily stress and worries. Physical activity has the unique ability to simultaneously invigorate and relax us. It makes us feel both energized and calm. Exercise also plays a positive role in treating anxiety and depression by reducing levels of the body’s stress hormones, such as adrenaline and cortisol. Plus, it stimulates the production of endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers and mood elevators.

And so it follows that the more active your body is during the day, the more likely you are to relax at night, fall asleep faster and sleep better. And, it is while you sleep that virtually all of the benefits of exercise are realized: a perfect system!
