Can’t get out of bed?

Sleep inertia is the feeling of grogginess most of us experience when we wake up. It’s that feeling you just can’t wake up. It typically lasts 15-30 minutes, though it can last up to four hours in some people.

Try these tips to ease your way into the day:

  • Get rid of the loud irritating buzz of your alarm clock. Replace it with a softer, gentler alarm tone. There are so many options available on the market today: sounds of chimes, nature, ocean waves, etc. Experiment until you find the one that’s right for you.
  • Enjoy a delicious cup of coffee. Some studies have found that physical performance and mental alertness increase significantly within 15 to 30 minutes. But be careful, too much caffeine can disrupt your next night’s sleep.
  • Get moving. Don’t stay in bed. Take out the trash or walk the dog. Being active is one of the best ways to clear out those cobwebs!
  • Let some light and fresh air in. Open the blinds and the window. Morning sunlight triggers the waking neurons in the brain. And a little fresh air is good for the soul!
  • Reset your internal clock by gradually going to bed and getting up a little earlier. Your current sleep schedule may be interrupting your deepest stage of sleep. By waking up a half hour earlier during a lighter stage of sleep, you may wake up more easily.

Other ways to wake up feeling good:

  • Avoid caffeine, nicotine and alcohol the night before
  • Don’t eat dinner right before bed
  • Keep your sleep environment cool – not too hot, not too cold
  • Sleep with the window open
  • Drink a glass of water
  • Eat well and exercise regularly
  • Breathe deeply, meditate
  • Be positive and find something to be excited about

And of course, make sure your pillow, mattress and other sleep products provide you with a comfortable, restful sleep. A too soft or lumpy mattress, a dead pillow, etc., can be extremely disruptive to your sleep, causing a variety of aches and pains – and an overall feeling of constant fatigue.
